EU welcomes start of dialogue between chavismo and opposition in Venezuela

The European Union High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, has welcomed the agreement between the government of Nicolás Maduro and the Venezuelan opposition to resume the negotiation process this Saturday in Mexico, more than a year after the failure of the previous attempt.

«Millions of Venezuelans are waiting for an agreement that responds to their democratic and socio-economic aspirations,» he has indicated in his official Twitter profile, adding that this process is «key» for a «peaceful solution» to the crisis.

The Norwegian authorities, who are acting as ‘facilitators’ of the process, have announced this Thursday that the parties «will sign a partial agreement on social matters» in this start of the negotiations, about which there had been speculation since last week.

The opposition will once again be represented by the Unitary Platform, which brings together the four major parties. This group has also confirmed the new attempt at rapprochement in a process which, in its opinion, «should never have been suspended».

On the part of Chavism, the delegation will again be headed precisely by the president of the National Assembly which emerged from the last elections, Jorge Rodriguez, who, despite the political differences, expects the «successful implementation» of the agreement.

«We are convinced that this social agreement will open the doors to advance the extensive agenda of national dialogue, in the fulfillment of all its objectives for the good of our homeland», he has pointed out.

Chavismo left the table in August 2021 as a sign of discomfort over the extradition to the United States of Alex Saab, considered Maduro’s front man, but in recent days contacts between the parties had resumed, with a particularly symbolic meeting last week at the Paris Peace Forum.
