The European Parliament on Thursday denounced FIFA’s «rampant» corruption and the designation of Qatar as the host country for the World Cup, and called on the country to extend the compensation fund to the families of workers killed during the construction of the stadiums.

The resolution approved by a show of hands in the European Parliament points out the «rampant, systemic and deeply rooted» corruption in FIFA and criticizes the lack of transparency in the award to Qatar as the organizer of the World Cup, something that damages the image and integrity of the sport.

The text also denounces the human rights situation in Qatar and the death of thousands of construction workers during the preparations for the tournament and points out that the country managed to host the World Cup amid «credible allegations of bribery and corruption».

The resolution calls on FIFA to investigate the deaths that occurred during construction work prior to the World Cup and to commit Qatar to making reparations to all those affected by labor abuses and accidents, including the families of the fatalities.

Likewise, MEPs call on Spain, France, Italy and Germany, as major soccer leagues, to address the reform of the institution that governs soccer federations in the world, to introduce democratic and transparent procedures for the awarding of World Cups and the strict application of criteria of human rights and sustainability in the host countries.

The plenary of the European Parliament pronounces itself on the situation of Human Rights in Qatar, after the Left group managed to introduce changes in the plenary agenda to include this resolution on the case of the Gulf country.
