The Prime Minister of Portugal, António Costa, has assured that, following the approval of the 2023 budgets in the National Assembly, approved by the absolute majority held by the Socialists in the Chamber, the measures will come into force as of January 1.

«It is a budget that responds to the needs of the present, seeking to support families and businesses, at a very difficult time with very high inflation as a result of the war that Russia unleashed against Ukraine,» Costa described, as reported by the Lusa news agency.

The text was approved with the votes in favor of the Socialist Party, which has the absolute majority in the Assembly, against the rejection of the opposition, formed by the Social Democratic Party (PSD), Chega, Liberal Initiative (IL), the Communist Party (PCP) and the Left Bloc (BE). The animalist PAN and the left-wing Livre party abstained.

Parliament overturned the last budgets for 2022 presented by Costa with 117 votes against, although they were subsequently approved in May after the Socialist Party won an absolute majority in early elections in January.
