A clear majority of Germans do not want former German Chancellor Angela Merkel to be the country’s head of government again, according to a poll reported by the German agency DPA.

Some 71 percent of respondents do not want the conservative politician, who stepped down after last year’s elections after 16 years as chancellor, to return to office, according to a representative online poll conducted by the Civey Institute for the Funke media group.

Less than a quarter, 23 percent, would like to see Merkel back at the helm of the European Union’s largest economy, according to the poll.

However, 43 percent of respondents believe Merkel did a better job than the current Social Democratic Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, has done so far. On the other hand, 41 percent of Germans think that Scholz’s unemployment in his 10 months of government is better than that of his predecessor.

The Civey Institute survey is based on 5,003 interviews conducted on November 23, DPA has learned.
