The Honduran government has mobilized more than 600 military police officers to reinforce surveillance in border areas in order to prevent the entry of suspected criminals.

Honduran President Xiomara Castro last week decreed a national emergency due to increased insecurity in the Central American country, which has declared «war» on criminal groups operating in Honduran territory. Castro advocated restricting basic freedoms where necessary.

This comprehensive plan also includes the armoring of borders, which has already resulted in additional deployment of agents in areas such as Las Manos, Goascorán, El Amatillo, Cabañas, Concepción, Colomoncagua, Mapulaca, La Virtud and Guaritas, according to the newspaper ‘El Heraldo’.

Honduras shares borders with Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala. A Guatemalan police spokesman, Edwin Monrroy, said that Guatemalan authorities have not received any warnings about the possible arrival of gang members, although they have already increased vigilance in the border departments of Izabal and Chiquimula, according to ‘Prensa Libre’.
