The President of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso – PRESIDENCIA DE ECUADOR

The president of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, signed a decree on Tuesday officially calling for a referendum, scheduled for 2023, which will address issues of citizen security, strengthening of democracy and environmental protection.

«Ecuadorians will be able to decide on eight questions that will bring more security, better representation and allow the care of the environment. With this consultation Ecuador wins!» the Ecuadorian president has indicated in his official Twitter profile.

The National Electoral Council (CNE) has a period of 15 days to make the official call and, after that, 60 days to execute the consultation, so the consultation is expected for the month of February, as reported by the newspaper ‘El Telegrafo’.

Among the questions, citizens will have to answer on issues such as the extradition of Ecuadorians who have committed crimes related to organized crime, as well as on the reduction of the number of assembly members or the requirement of a minimum number of affiliates to political formations, among others.
