Peruvian health authorities confirmed Thursday that the Andean nation has entered what is now considered a fifth wave of coronavirus infections, and have warned of the possibility of reintroducing the mandatory use of masks.

The Ministry of Health has announced that, given the increase of infections in different regions of the country in recent weeks, Peru is in a new wave of COVID-19 infections, according to local radio station RPP.

The health ministry has also warned that if the trend continues to rise, it could reintroduce the mandatory use of masks. Health has also called on the population to complete the vaccination schedule.

The country’s health authorities have confirmed in the last few days infection figures of around 10,000 positive cases per day, and in some cases exceeding them. Peru has registered more than 4.2 million infections since the outbreak of the pandemic, which has already left more than 217,000 dead.
