Peru’s National Emergency Operations Center (COEN) has reported the declaration of a State of Emergency due to lack of water in 111 districts in the departments of Arequipa and Puno, in the south of the country.

«Executive declares for 60 days the State of Emergency in 111 districts of the departments of Arequipa and Puno, due to imminent danger in the face of water deficit,» the COEN has informed citing a Supreme Decree already published in the official gazette.

The official publication cites a technical report of the National Institute of Civil Defense (INDECI) that requires «the adoption of urgent measures that allow the Regional Governments of Arequipa and Puno and the local governments involved (…) to execute the measures and actions of exception, immediate and necessary to reduce the existing Very High Risk».

The declaration of the State of Emergency affects 11 districts in the department of Arequipa and 100 in the department of Puno.
