The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, on Tuesday accused the ‘Jaime Martinez’ column of the dissidents of the now defunct FARC guerrillas of the ambush that killed four soldiers and wounded six others in the Cauca municipality of Buenos Aires (southwest).

The attack took place in the village of Munchique, where this column of FARC dissidents is known to operate. The soldiers were surprised by the throwing of grenades and improvised explosives, known as tatucos, reports RCN radio station.

Petro has called an extraordinary security council and stressed that the army «will not abandon the zone» and will remain in the affected area, which has some of the main drug trafficking routes and other illegal markets for access to the Pacific.

Questioned about the possibility of starting a dialogue with this armed organization, Petro remarked that the only process that currently exists in this sense is the one being carried out with the guerrilla of the National Liberation Army (ELN), not with the dissidents of the FARC, with whom only «one possibility has been discussed».
