The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, has applauded the call for «national unity» of the new president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, to whom he has offered the support of the bloc for the sake of «the imperative need to restore the democratic path».

«We reaffirm the support of the OAS for democracy», said Almagro, in a Twitter message in which he appealed for «an inclusive, open, frank and respectful dialogue».

The head of the OAS has also pronounced himself on the Peruvian crisis in the extraordinary session of the Permanent Council, to anticipate that this Wednesday he would try to contact Boluarte.

«What happened today in Peru when Pedro Castillo dissolved the Congress of the Republic, without constitutional, legal or normative basis, constitutes an alteration of the constitutional order in the country», he declared, according to the Andina news agency. In this sense, he pointed out that Castillo’s pretension «is condemnable and repudiable from every point of view».

«Peru demonstrated today a commendable attachment to the Constitution, (but) Peru still needs dialogue, consensus, vision of State. Its citizens and citizens deserve it», added Almagro.
