Ukrainian authorities reported Thursday that widespread power outages have again been reported in and around the capital Kiev, a measure they described as «necessary» to try to repair the system and prevent accidents.

The energy company DTEK urged the population to remain «calm and quiet» while workers try to «do everything possible to correct the situation» caused by Russian attacks on the territory, according to Ukrinform agency.

These cuts have been extended to the whole of the Kiev region in an attempt by the authorities to guarantee supplies in the face of rising temperatures. The attack perpetrated on November 23 has caused a blackout in all the nuclear power plants in the area, most of them thermal and hydroelectric.

Russian forces have targeted the country’s energy facilities as the main target of their offensive, especially in the shelling carried out since the beginning of October. The Ukrainian government has since decided to introduce scheduled supply cuts to repair the facilities.

The president of Ukraine’s state energy company, Volodimir Kudritski, has indicated that the country will be able to resume its schedule of scheduled outages this week if there is no further shelling.
