The European Union has congratulated Peru’s new president, Dina Boluarte, while urging the Peruvian authorities to respect democratic principles, after Congress dismissed Pedro Castillo after announcing the closure of Parliament and declaring a government of emergency.
The EU diplomatic office has indicated that it «welcomes the peaceful and democratic manner in which Peru dealt with recent internal political developments».
«The EU recalls that full respect for the Constitution, democratic principles and the separation of powers, in a spirit of cooperation and constructive institutional dialogue, is crucial for the country to restore political stability and respond to the needs and aspirations of Peruvian citizens,» reads a statement from the European External Action Service.
EU Foreign Affairs Spokesman Pedro Stano reiterated his support «for all efforts aimed at restoring dialogue and strengthening the rule of law».
In this sense, Stano expressed that Brussels hopes to continue strengthening good relations with Peru, as well as working with the Peruvian authorities on shared interests that will benefit the citizens of both the Latin American country and the old continent.
