French President Emmanuel Macron has defended his trip to Qatar to attend the World Cup semifinals, in the midst of the controversy over the investigation opened in Belgium for an alleged bribery scheme in the European Parliament.
«I assume it totally,» said Macron, who on Wednesday was absent from a meeting of European and Asian leaders and witnessed in the stadium the victory of France against Morocco. In this regard, he explained on his arrival at the Council in Brussels that he is «behind the team» in Qatar as he once was when he played in Russia, host of the previous World Cup.
On the investigations opened in Belgium, in which a vice-president of the European Parliament, Eva Kaili, has been arrested, the French president has advocated «letting justice do its job» and has applauded the measures of «transparency» and «exemplarity».
