Mexico’s Congress approved on Wednesday the reform to the Federal Labor Law with all amendments of the House and Senate to grant 12 continuous days of paid vacation to workers from the first year of contract, which will progressively increase to 20 days in 2029.
After its final approval unanimously in the Upper House, Mexicans will be entitled to 12 days of paid vacation as from the first year of employment, double the six days currently regulated by law, as reported by ‘El Sol de México’.
The modification, promoted by both Morena, the ruling party, and Movimiento Ciudadano, has been approved with 116 votes in favor, zero against and zero abstentions in the Senate, being thus forwarded to the Federal Executive for its publication in the Mexican Official Gazette.
The amendment to the Labor Law also establishes that the minimum paid vacation days will be increased by two days, reaching 20 days in 2029. Likewise, as from the sixth year of a worker in a company, the vacation period will increase by two days for every five years of service until reaching 30 days of vacation, and from there until reaching 32 days of mandatory rest for 35 years of service.
The ruling, which amends Articles 76 and 78 of the Federal Labor Law, also establishes that two days of vacation will be increased for each subsequent year of work until reaching 20 days; and as of the sixth year of work, the vacation period will increase by two days for every five days of service.
Movimiento Ciudadano Senator Patricia Mercado has stressed the need to work in order to live, noting however that «it is neither rational nor healthy to live in order to work».
«Finally the agreement, and it seems to me very important that this agreement has been given (..) This is the right that no one can haggle over and that, indeed, as has been said here, rights are not negotiated, they are established, recognized and exercised», added Mercado in statements to the Senate collected by the aforementioned newspaper.
