At least 44 people have been arrested over protests this week in Jordan against rising fuel prices, marked especially by the shooting death of a senior police officer, blamed on groups of «hooligans and outlaws».
«At least 44 people who participated in the riots in several regions of the kingdom have been arrested and will be brought to justice,» the Public Security Directorate said in a statement posted Saturday on its Facebook page.
Jordanian security forces have also perceived a «noticeable decrease in the activities of the anti-riot unit since yesterday, especially in the southern governorates.»
The situation seems to have calmed down in Husseiniya, where the ‘number two’ of the Maan Police, Abdulrazaq Dalabé, was shot in the head. In this regard, «investigations into the incident of the martyrdom of the colonel continue and will not stop until the perpetrator is arrested and brought to justice to receive his terrible punishment».
The economic crisis in Jordan has been deepened by rising fuel prices, which led truck drivers to go on strike last week. In addition, there has been a succession of protests over the past few days, including several on Thursday that led security forces to fire tear gas.
