Poland’s Police Commander-in-Chief Jaroslaw Szymczyk acknowledged Saturday that a grenade launcher given to him by Ukraine went off by accident, triggering a detonation that caused minor injuries and destroyed part of his office.
Szymczyk, who claimed he had received assurances that the grenade launcher was nothing more than «scrap metal,» ended up causing the explosion when he placed the weapon upright on the floor, according to statements to radio station RMF.FM.
The police chief thus breaks his silence after the strange information appeared this week about a «gift bomb» from Ukraine. The Interior Ministry first confirmed that the explosion occurred when opening a gift given by the Ukrainian security services to Szumczyk himself during a recent working visit to Ukrainian territory.
«The explosion was quite powerful. The force of the impact penetrated the ground and caused damage to the ceiling,» he added.
The detonation eventually caused damage to three floors of the building, according to investigators, who have not yet provided information on why this grenade launcher would have been fired.
