The Movement Towards Socialism (MAS) has celebrated as every year on December 18 the anniversary of the first electoral victory of the party, then led by Evo Morales, in 2005.
This year the MAS celebrates the so-called Day of the Democratic and Cultural Revolution divided between supporters of Morales, displaced from the presidency in 2019, and the current president, Luis Arce.
Precisely, Arce’s government has issued a communiqué on the occasion of the date calling for reflection to the militants of the ruling party and advocating for unity, in order to «avoid fractures that, if they deepen, will generate damages that will be difficult to repair».
The Government states that «we should never be afraid to recognize the existence of internal tensions» and attributes them to «false accusations made against us in a public and permanent manner» about a plan against Morales and to prevent him from running for the next presidential elections.
This unity is key to avoid «another coup d’état by the fascist right wing (…) which not only rejoices in what is happening inside MAS, but encourages it in alliance with the international right wing».
Morales has participated in a celebration act in the municipal stadium of Sacaba, in Cochabamba. «We are the political instrument of the Process of Change that represents the dignified and working people. We are strengthened in the unity of social sectors, indigenous movements, workers and intellectuals. Thanks to our convictions we have overcome so many betrayals and conspiracies,» Morales posted on Twitter before the event.
The deputy close to Morales Gladys Quispe has stressed that the existence of discrepancies is «natural» in a political force, and therefore, has pointed out this Sunday’s meeting as an opportunity to resolve differences that will strengthen the party.
However, the spokesman of the MAS parliamentary group and supporter of Arce, Andres Flores, has indicated that no formal invitation has been sent to them by the MAS leadership, controlled by Morales.
«They have not sent us any formal invitation, but we are part of the political instrument and, therefore, we are going to attend the anniversary event to be held in Cochabamba», he has indicated.
Flores has stated that the conflicts must be solved in a national assembly in which all the social sectors and the assembly members participate in order to reach a meeting point.
