The president of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, has accused the National Assembly of going «on vacation» and delaying the approval of reforms that the government considers key, such as the new law regarding security issues in the South American country.
The plenary session of the Assembly failed to start on Sunday due to the absence of the great majority of legislators, among them the deputies of Union for Hope (Unes), allies of former Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa and who represent the largest group.
«While we do not stop working every day and from any place, the Assembly is left without a quorum to deal with an important bill to strengthen the fight against insecurity,» Lasso has lamented, in relation to a reform that the Executive demands. «They went on vacation until January 3. And the security of Ecuadorians?» he added on Twitter.
For the Government of Ecuador, which has also spoken out in another statement on the controversy, the paralysis of the Assembly «not only denotes indifference and indolence», but also «flouts» «judicial and constitutional» decisions.
Ecuadorian authorities have adopted extraordinary measures in recent months to combat the growing wave of violence, with states of emergency in several regions, including Guayaquil, which have failed to contain the escalating tensions.
