U.S. President Joe Biden has appointed Joe Kennedy III as the new special envoy for Northern Ireland for economic affairs to promote development and opportunity in the region.
Kennedy will work to strengthen U.S. people-to-people ties in Northern Ireland «for the benefit of all communities,» according to a statement from the U.S. State Department.
«His role builds on the long-standing U.S. commitment to support peace, prosperity and stability in Northern Ireland and the peace dividends of the Belfast Agreement (also known as the Good Friday Agreement),» the missive continued.
According to the U.S. Government, Joe Kennedy has devoted his career to public service, including eight years in the U.S. House of Representatives, serving as an assistant district attorney in Massachusetts and serving as a Peace Corps volunteer.
This experience would have served him well in «supporting economic growth in Northern Ireland and deepening America’s engagement with all communities.»
«In parallel, U.S. diplomats in Europe and Washington will continue to engage with political leaders in efforts to restore the Northern Ireland Executive and resolve differences over the Northern Ireland Protocol,» the State Department has said.
