Dozens of Afghan university students walked out of classrooms Wednesday in a sign of solidarity and protest after the Taliban announced a veto on women’s access to higher education in the country.
The students, mostly medical students, have decided to suspend classes and leave the classrooms at the University of Nangarhar, according to Amu TV channel.
The decision of the Taliban, who have announced a ban «until further notice» on the participation of women in universities, has provoked a cascade of criticism at national and international level. The situation has led several professors at universities in Kabul and Kunduz to resign in protest against the measure.
The Ministry of Higher Education, headed by Mullah Neda Mohamed Nadim, issued a brief statement on Tuesday afternoon urging the suspension of the admission of women to higher educational institutions without explanation. This veto had already occurred earlier in the country’s secondary education.
Images spread through social networks show women and girls hugging and crying outside the gates of universities this Wednesday morning after they were denied access.
«Last night when I heard about it I read the news twenty times and cried,» an affected student has asserted in statements to Shamshad TV channel. «There is no hope anymore,» she said.
