EU High Representative for Foreign Policy Josep Borrell has applauded the resolution on Burma adopted on Wednesday by the UN Security Council and called, among other measures, for the release of those detained following the February 2021 coup, including former political leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
The UN Security Council has called in its first resolution on this issue for an end to the violence in Burma and urged the military junta to take «immediate action», with an explicit call to respect the ‘roadmap’ outlined by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
For Borrel, «the message is clear» and involves «ending the violence, guaranteeing humanitarian access, freeing prisoners (…) and respecting the will of the people», as he stated on Twitter. The head of European diplomacy has said that the EU is ready to promote «concrete actions» to advance the mediation of the AESAN.
