The grand imam of Al Azhar University, Ahmed el Tayeb, said Friday that banning Afghan women from attending universities in Afghanistan contradicts Sharia law and called on the Taliban-installed authorities to «reconsider their decision».
«We express our rejection of this decision and consider that it does not represent the Sharia and radically contradicts the precepts of the Noble Quran,» he said, adding that this ban ignores more than 2,000 hadiths (deeds and sayings of the Prophet Muhammad), according to the Egyptian daily ‘Ahram Online’.
Also, El Tayeb, who heads Al Azhar, which is considered the world’s leading Sunni institution, has put the spotlight on the historical figures of women who have been pioneers in education, science and politics. «This shocking decision for the conscience of Muslims and non-Muslims alike should not have been issued by any Muslim,» he said.
«Islam strongly denounces such a ban, as it contradicts the legal rights that Islam guarantees equally for women and men. So, to claim otherwise is a fabrication against this precious religion,» he has zanelled.
The Ministry of Higher Education, headed by Mullah Neda Mohamed Nadim, issued a brief statement on Tuesday afternoon urging the suspension of women’s admission to higher educational institutions without elaborating on the matter. This veto had already occurred earlier in the country’s secondary education.
