Peru prepares commission for possible payment of «reparations» to families of those killed in protests

Peru’s Minister of Justice, José Tello, announced this Saturday that the Government is preparing the creation of a commission to evaluate the possible payment of «reparations» to the relatives of those killed in the protests registered in the country following the arrest of former President Pedro Castillo after he tried to dissolve the Congress.

«It seems important to me that, from the justice sector, we comply with the order of the president (Dina Boluarte) and the ‘premier’ (Alberto Otárola)», he said in declarations to the radio station RPP. Thus, he pointed out that «a multisectorial commission is being formed to see the issue of reparations or citizen support that we are going to give to the bereaved».

Thus, he emphasized that the objective is to «mitigate» the needs of the families, although he recognized that «human life has no price». «It is a response of the State to a situation, but it must be taken into account that it is a palliative because what really should not happen (…) is that these deaths cannot be in vain», he argued.

«These people must not have died in vain. What must be made clear to us is that this type of situation cannot happen again and above all we must not allow illegal Peru to intervene because what could have been a healthy and democratic protest ends in violence and even more, as has been demonstrated, in a violence financed by the dark side», he concluded.

So far 30 people have been killed in the repression of the protests in support of Castillo, which have provoked criticism against the security forces and against Boluarte, who took office after the former president was arrested shortly after trying to dissolve Congress to prevent a new motion of censure from being voted against him.
