The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, expressed her condolences on Thursday for the death of former Brazilian footballer Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known as Pelé, and highlighted the values he passed on to future generations.
«Pelé was one of the greatest, if not the greatest. He entertained billions, introduced generations to the pleasures of soccer and showed the world that there is no dream too big,» Metsola said on his Twitter profile.
In a post that he accompanied with an image of Pelé in his playing days, Metsola said that Europe joins «Brazil and the world» in mourning the death of «a giant of the beautiful game.» «May he rest in peace,» he concluded.
Pelé, considered one of the best in the history of the sport, died Thursday at the age of 82 after suffering health problems since late November, according to Brazilian media and later confirmed by his family.
The former striker, three-time world champion with the ‘Canarinha’, had been admitted to the Albert Einstein Hospital in the city of Sao Paulo since November 29 and his health condition worsened as the days went by, despite the fact that both he and his family tried to send reassuring messages.
