The UN has applauded the steps taken in recent hours to «de-escalate tensions» in northern Kosovo, including the lifting of barricades set up by the Serb minority, and appealed to all parties to return to the dialogue table.
The United Nations representative in Kosovo, Caroline Ziadeh, is confident that «relations can be normalized as soon as possible», for which she highlighted the «conscientious» work that has been undertaken in recent weeks by the international community, for the sake of «security and stability» in the area, according to a press release.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced late Wednesday the removal of the barricades set up in the northern part of Kosovo, where tensions have soared in recent months, initially because of the potential entry into force of a new regulation on license plates. Vucic warned that removing the blockades would still take 24 to 48 hours.
In fact, Kosovar police reported Thursday the burning of several vehicles at one of these barricades, in the Mitrovica area, according to Kosovapress. Local authorities have ruled out that this incident has caused personal injuries.
On the other hand, former Kosovo Serb policeman Dejan Pantic, whose arrest on December 10 sparked further tensions, was granted permission on Wednesday to leave prison and remain under house arrest while investigations against him are progressing.
