The Bavarian town where Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI was born in 1967, Marktl, has become this Saturday the scene of tributes in memory of the late pontiff; also in his birthplace, now converted into a museum.
The house where he was born has opened its doors exceptionally during this weekend, despite the fact that it is normally closed in winter. In the room where his mother gave birth, candles have been lit, while the managers have set up a book of condolences.
The Prime Minister of Bavaria, Markus Soeder, has also expressed his condolences for the death of Benedict XVI, «a great representative of the Catholic Church» who «has always carried his homeland in his heart».
«Many people will remember him with gratitude, not only as Pope Benedict XVI, but also as a humble pastor. He gave strength and direction to many people,» the Bavarian leader said.
