Several Latin American political leaders have joined this Saturday the worldwide condolences for the death of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, whose abdication in 2013 opened the doors of the Vatican to the first Latin American Pontiff, the Argentine Francis.
From Brazil, both the president-elect, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, and the outgoing president, Jair Bolsonaro, have spoken out. The latter stressed that Benedict XVI «leaves an immense legacy for the Catholic Church, for all Christians and for humanity».
Lula, for his part, has expressed his «sadness» in a message on Twitter in which he recalled the visit the late pope made to Brazil in 2007. «We had the opportunity to talk about his commitment to the faith and Christian teachings,» he said.
The president of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, was «moved» by the news: «I send my feelings of sorrow and those of the Ecuadorian people to Pope Francis and to all Catholics around the world».
