The European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Stella Kyriakides, has called on China to share data on its current COVID-19 infection situation in a «transparent» manner and reminded that the only way to tackle the pandemic is to collaborate «closely» at the global level.
«China must share data in a transparent way about its current situation. We can only tackle the pandemic if we work closely together at EU and global level,» Kyriakides said Thursday via his Twitter profile.
The Commissioner’s request coincides with the one made on Tuesday by the World Health Organization (WHO), which asked China for «faster and more reliable» data after showing its doubts about the veracity of the figures of infections and deaths of COVID-19 being reported by the Asian country.
On the other hand, the Commissioner said she welcomed «with satisfaction» the agreement of the Member States on a coordinated response of the European Union (EU) to the outbreak of contagions in China at the meeting of the Integrated Policy Response to Crises (IPCR) mechanism.
The meeting concluded with the «strong recommendation» to EU countries to require travelers from China to take a negative COVID-19 test in order to respond to the Chinese government’s easing of measures as of January 8.
