Peruvian conservative congressman José Cueto has confirmed that a criminal complaint has been filed against former Bolivian President Evo Morales calling for his arrest for encouraging the secession of parts of Peru in the context of the protests against the removal of Peruvian President Pedro Castillo from office.
«To that end, various public acts and pronouncements have been made in local universities, popular assemblies and through the social network Twitter, haranguing the masses to carry out the separation of their areas and departments, including Puno, Arequipa, Madre de Dios, Apurimac, Ayacucho, Moquegua and Tacna, with the aim of forming a new Republic,» explained Cueto, deputy for Renovación Popular, as reported by the Bolivian newspaper ‘El Deber’.
The complaint also requests that Morales and other leaders of the Movimiento Al Socialismo (MAS) party be banned from entering Peruvian territory.
Cueto himself warned in an interview with El Deber Radio that they are going to request that Morales «not only be declared persona non grata, but (that) he be declared an enemy of our country and press for our Foreign Ministry to return, as it has already done, the ambassador who was in Bolivia, and to reject and withdraw the ambassador (of Bolivia) who is here in my country, to return to his country».
In response, Morales pointed out that «oligarchic groups of the right wing in Peru try to intimidate us with lies and unsustainable denunciations» and warned that «brutal repression continues against indigenous brothers who demand justice, democracy and the recovery of their natural resources». «Deep Peru has awakened», proclaimed Morales.
«The only separatism in Peru is caused by racism, exclusion and discrimination of Lima’s power groups against their own people. Deep down, the right wing does not accept that indigenous people, those vilified for their skin color, surname or place of origin come to power,» he added in a Twitter thread.
In addition, Morales has argued that Runasur — a regional platform of unions, peasant movements and social organizations — «is a project of integration to defend life and Mother Earth, to recover the sovereignty of the peoples with dignity, solidarity and freedom.» «That is no crime. It is a crime to massacre the people to continue plundering their natural resources,» he reiterated.
