European Parliament President Roberta Metsola on Saturday welcomed the German government’s decision to supply Marder infantry fighting vehicles to Ukraine.
«It is important that we continue to support the Ukrainian people: politically, humanitarian, financially and militarily,» she said Saturday at the closed-door meeting of Christian Social Union (CSU) deputies at the Seeon Monastery in Upper Bavaria.
Europe must meet Ukrainian demands for help, Metsola said. «Strengthening our security also depends on strengthening the security of our neighbors. They are not strong and secure if we are not,» he assured.
In response to CSU leader Markus Soeder’s criticism that Germany always acts too late and has become the «lone man of Europe», Metsola argued that in each member state there are different debates and approaches, but «you have to do what you can do because there is no other option and each country must exercise its responsibility.
In the course of last year, Germany provided more than 12 billion euros to Ukraine as part of its support for the country, said German Cabinet spokesman Steffen Hebestreit, in comments reported by CNN.
«In 2022 the Federal Government provided 12 billion euros of support to Ukraine and will continue this course in 2023,» he assured the media after a conversation between German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski.
