
At least four policemen and ten civilians have been injured after the frustrated takeover of the Inca Manco Capac airport in the southern Peruvian city of Juliaca, which has been temporarily closed for security reasons.
The Peruvian Ombudsman’s Office has confirmed that at least 14 people were injured after the confrontations that took place in the vicinity of the airport on Friday. At this moment, at least six people remain in the Carlos Monge Medrano hospital in Juliaca, some of them with gunshot wounds and serious prognosis.
As reported by RPP, the demonstrators arrived at the terminal throwing stones and other objects with the idea of entering the runway, in which attempt they also burned a police car. Security agents, who were inside the airport as a security measure, dispersed the demonstrators with tear gas bombs.
Aeropuertos Andinos de Peru has confirmed the temporary closure of the airport due to the anti-government protests.
«Our Inca Manco Capac airport in Juliaca has suspended operations as of today, January 6 in the afternoon, due to the acts of violence that have occurred and the lack of security in its vicinity that put the safety of our equipment and passengers at risk,» the operating company has shared.
The protesters are demanding the resignation of Peru’s president, Dina Boluarte, the closure of Congress and the advancement of general elections to 2023.
