The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, has called for the application of the Democratic Charter of the Organization of American States (OAS) in response to the seizure of the headquarters of the main bodies of the executive, legislative and judicial branches of Brazil’s executive, legislative and judicial branches by supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro.
«It is urgent time for a meeting of the OAS if it wants to remain alive as an institution and apply the democratic charter,» Petro posted on his Twitter account.
«All my solidarity to (Luiz Inácio) Lula (Da Silva) and the people of Brazil. Fascism decides to stage a coup. The right wing has not been able to keep the non-violence pact,» he has pointed out.
Petro recalled that his government has defended the strengthening of the Inter-American Human Rights system by applying the current norms and extending the charter to women’s, environmental and collective rights «but the answer is parliamentary coups or violent coups by the extreme right».
