U.S. House Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has warned that Republican Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s concessions to far-right representatives in exchange for his vote for House Speaker are «just the beginning.»
«Our overall concern is that the historic dysfunction that we have seen this week has not come to an end, it is just the beginning,» lamented the Democratic leader before the microphones of the NBC television network, where he warned that the block of the far right has been resolved with concessions that may go against the welfare of the general population.
«Although Congress has been captive at this particular time, what will be a problem is whether the American people will be captive for the next few years of the agenda of the most extreme Republicans,» insisted Jeffries, alluding at this point to the precepts ‘MAGA’, initials of the ultra-right slogan ‘Make America Great Again’ (Make America great again, in Spanish) and adopted by former President Donald Trump.
McCarthy has seen how during these first days of 2023 the most right-wing faction of his party has blocked his own ascent to the Presidency of the House of Representatives, which was finally solved in a demo-fifth vote and after making concessions to the most conservative Republican wing.
At this point, Jeffries denounced McCarthy’s weakness at the head of the House, since it is in the hands of these more extreme Republican representatives the possibility of blocking future votes, which «would undermine the health, safety and welfare of the American people».
