The Government of Peru has banned the entry into the country of nine Bolivian citizens, including former President Evo Morales, on the grounds that they have engaged in «proselytizing activities», apparently after they interceded in favor of the deposed Pedro Castillo.
«Peru is a sovereign and democratic country, whose migratory system establishes that all foreign citizens in national territory have the duty to conduct themselves in compliance with the legal system, especially with regard to national security and internal order», reads a note from the Ministry of the Interior.
In this sense, it has questioned the activities of Bolivian citizens in Peru, in «clear affectation» to security and order, and has confirmed that since January 6 Morales and other eight compatriots cannot enter Peruvian territory.
The Ministry has stressed, however, the «historical ties» that unite Peru with other countries in the region, with which it carries out «important alliances aimed at achieving development, social peace, welfare and security».
Morales has defended Castillo, removed by Congress on December 7 after he tried to increase his powers with a government of exception. He has also questioned the role of the current government, headed by Dina Boluarte, in the repression of the demonstrations.
