Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has affirmed in front of the governors of the country’s 27 states that the demonstrators who stormed Brazilian institutions on Sunday were calling for a coup d’état.
«The electoral result was given and was respected by a large part of society, but some losers did not accept it and are in the streets. What are they demanding? They are in front of the barracks in almost all the national territory demanding a coup d’état», declared Lula.
In this sense, the president reiterated that the participants of the assault «did not have an agenda of demands», but only wanted «a coup».
«It is not possible for a movement to last as long as it did in front of the barracks if there are no people to finance it. We are going to investigate and we are going to find out who financed it,» Lula said in reference to the encampments of hundreds of supporters of the country’s former leader Jair Bolsonaro in front of the Army barracks.
«It was very difficult for us to conquer democracy in that country. We need to learn to live together democratically in diversity,» Lula added, as he indicated through his profile on the social network Twitter.
Likewise, the president criticized the denial of the electoral process in the country, as well as the doubts about the electronic ballot boxes, or the rejection of the result.
At the meeting, which took place at the Planalto Palace, the representatives of the states expressed their solidarity and offered support to the federal government, defending democracy and dialogue to avoid such an action in the future.
Allies of former president Jair Bolsonaro also participated, such as the governor of Sao Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas, and the vice governor of the Federal District, Celina Leao, –now interim governor, after the temporary suspension of the governor of Brasília, Ibaneis Rocha, for his responsibility in the assault.
De Freitas affirmed that «it was very important to be present (at the meeting)», since it is an «act of solidarity with the constituted powers», as well as democracy.
«This meeting today means that Brazilian democracy, after yesterday’s episodes, will be further strengthened,» added the governor of Brazil’s financial center.
