Peru’s Public Prosecutor’s Office has announced the opening of a new investigation of the country’s president, Dina Boluarte, for the death of at least 17 people on Monday in the town of Juliaca, in the south of the Andean nation.
«There is already an open investigation of preliminary proceedings corresponding to the events that occurred in December. And today, we are taking the decision to open a new prosecutor’s file,» announced Patricia Benavides, the nation’s public prosecutor.
In declarations from Trujillo, Benavides stated that the Public Prosecutor’s Office will not allow «any death to go unpunished» and has emphasized the value of opening these investigations against «the high officials who are responsible for everything that is happening».
However, Benavides refused to clarify what crimes the head of state is accused of, and stressed that they will be communicated when appropriate, according to the Peruvian radio station RPP.
At least 17 people were killed on Monday during clashes with Peruvian security forces in the context of protests in the Andean nation since the dismissal and arrest of former president Pedro Castillo in early December after trying to dissolve the Parliament and decree an emergency government.
Among the main demands of the demonstrators is the resignation of Boluarte – until then Castillo’s ‘number two’ – as president of the country and the calling of new elections.
