The President of Taiwan, Tsai Ing Wen, has claimed Tuesday the «union of democracies» in the world to defend «freedom» after the visit of a delegation of the Parliament of Germany to the island in the face of increased tension with China.
«Today, in the face of expansionist authoritarianism, democracies must stand united in defending the values of democracy and freedom,» she said during a meeting with the delegation, which was led by Deputy Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmerman.
«This visit shows your friendship and support for Taiwan, for which I express my deepest gratitude,» said Tsai, who praised the relationship between the two countries.
For her part, Strack-Zimmerman said the Russian invasion of Ukraine is a call for «Europe and the whole world to open its eyes.» «We can see what has happened in Ukraine…. This affects the whole world,» he said.
