U.S. President Joe Biden said Tuesday that he was surprised when U.S. authorities discovered classified documents in an office he used during his time as vice president under Barack Obama.
«I was surprised to learn that there were government records that were taken there to that office,» said the U.S. leader in statements to the press during a trilateral summit of North American countries that has taken place in Mexico City.
Biden also insisted that he does not know what is contained in the documents found in a Washington office when he was an honorary professor at the University of Pennsylvania.
However, the president has assured that «he is fully cooperating». «People know that I take classified documents, classified information seriously,» he said in statements reported by Bloomberg.
According to sources contacted by CNN, the classified documents include U.S. intelligence memos and information materials on Ukraine, Iran and the United Kingdom.
Biden’s lawyers found at least a dozen confidential documents before the mid-term legislative elections at the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement, a private entity of the president attached to the University of Pennsylvania.
In total, at least ten confidential documents have been accounted for, although it is not clear what they are about or why they were in Biden’s private office and not in the custody of the National Archives.
