Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic cut short a training match with Russian Daniil Medvedev on Wednesday due to hamstring discomfort, a physical problem he has been carrying since Adelaide, with less than a week to go before the start of the Australian Open.

«It’s a hamstring problem I had in Adelaide last week. It was in the semifinals against Medvedev, and today I played him in a practice match,» explained the nine-time Australian Grand Slam champion in statements to Nine’s Wide World of Sports.

The 35-year-old tennis player recounted that he noticed «a little bit» how the hamstring «pulled» him, so he did not want to risk «something worse». «I played a set, I apologized and he was understanding,» he added, stressing that it was a precautionary decision, as he just wanted to «avoid major scares before the Australian Open,» which starts this Monday, January 16.

The Serb is also scheduled to play a practice match this week against local Nick Kyrgios. Djokovic beat American Sebastian Korda (6-7(8), 7-6(3), 6-4) in the final of the Adelaide (Australia) tournament on Sunday to win his 92nd singles title. In this way, he became the fourth player with the most singles titles in the history of the ATP circuit, equaling Spaniard Rafa Nadal.
