Mexico City’s head of government, Claudia Sheinbaum, reported on Wednesday that security authorities have arrested a total of eleven people allegedly involved in the attack against journalist Ciro Gómez Leyva last December.
According to Sheinbaum, agents from the Secretariat of Citizen Security and the Attorney General’s Office, with the support of the National Intelligence Center, have carried out up to twelve house searches that have finally led to the aforementioned arrests.
The capital’s mayor reported the operation on her official Twitter profile, where she stressed that «there will be no impunity» for those who attacked the renowned Mexican journalist.
Later, in a press conference, Sheinbaum detailed that, as part of this operation, the authorities have dismantled a criminal gang dedicated to extortion and kidnapping led by Pedro Pool ‘N’ and who would be behind the attack on Gómez Leyva.
The Attorney General of Mexico City, Ernestina Godoy, has announced that the Public Prosecutor’s Office will charge the suspects with the crimes of attempted murder against the prestigious journalist.
The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has repeatedly insisted on clarifying what happened and identifying those responsible, for which he even appealed to the collaboration of citizens, as recalled by ‘El Universal’.
In mid-December, Gómez Leyva was the target of a direct armed attack in Mexico City when, during the night, several men on a motorcycle shot at the vehicle in which the journalist was traveling back to his home.
