The European Union called on Wednesday to avoid any steps in Bolivia that inflame violence and expects due judicial process to be respected in the case of Santa Cruz Governor Luis Fernando Camacho, arrested and imprisoned for his role in the violent demonstrations and protests in 2019 that ended with the departure of then-President Evo Morales from the country.
An EU spokesman explained to Europa Press that EU diplomacy and the EU-27 are closely following the situation of the governor of Santa Cruz and one of the main opponents of the Movement Towards Socialism founded by Morales and to which the current president, Luis Arce, belongs.
«Any step or action that could lead to escalation or violence should be avoided. As we have indicated in the past, we expect the rule of law and due process to be respected in ongoing or future judicial proceedings,» said the spokesman.
Camacho is the governor of Bolivia’s richest region and historically opposed to MAS governments, the scene in the last month of new protests and blockades, this time to oppose the census law.
His arrest is motivated by his role in the violent demonstrations and protests that took place after the opposition, supported by the Armed Forces, pressured former president Morales to renounce his victory in the October 2019 elections.
