The Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, expressed his gratitude on Wednesday for the repatriation of two Spanish women with several minors in their care who had allegedly married jihadists and who came from refugee camps in Syria.
«It is something to be grateful for. We have asked the international community, especially those Western countries that have (in refugee camps) citizens — particularly when those citizens are women and children — to do everything possible to repatriate them,» Guterres’ spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, told a press conference.
«The conditions in the camps are almost inhumane and extremely challenging, and each country has a responsibility towards its own citizens,» Dujarric stressed.
The two women who arrived in Spain overnight Monday are Yolanda Martinez, who has four children, and Luna Fernandez, who arrived in Spain with nine children.
A Foreign Ministry official visited before the summer Spanish women linked to Islamic State who remain in refugee camps in northern Syria in order to establish the conditions for their eventual repatriation to Spain, diplomatic sources confirmed to Europa Press.
