The Regional Health Directorate (DIRESA) of the Peruvian department of Puno has raised to 20 the number of deaths during the protests in Juliaca that resulted in clashes between demonstrators and police officers.
Peruvian authorities confirmed on Wednesday that 17 of the civilians who died during the clashes with security forces died as a result of wounds caused by firearms projectiles.
These facts deny the official version given until now, which assured that the demonstrators had died as a result of throwing stones or injuries caused by sharp-edged weapons.
With the latest deaths, more than 45 people have lost their lives since the outbreak of the mobilizations for the dismissal of President Pedro Castillo, who was removed by Congress after trying to arrogate to himself more powers with a view to forming a government of exception.
Following these incidents, Peru’s Prime Minister Alberto Otarola announced on Tuesday a three-day curfew in the department of Puno.
