A group of nearly fifty Democratic members of Congress have written to U.S. President Joe Biden to ask the FBI to investigate former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro for the attacks on institutions last Sunday in Brasilia.

In total, 46 Democratic Party congressmen have requested that the FBI investigate whether the attacks in the Three Powers Square were planned in the United States, where Bolsonaro has been since last December 30.

«The illegal and violent attack on January 8 against Brazilian government institutions was crafted based on months of fabrications before and after the elections by Bolsonaro and his allies, in which they alleged that the October 30 presidential election had been stolen,» the letter reads.

«Bolsonaro flew to Florida before the end of his term (…) and we are concerned with accounts that he currently resides in Orlando. The United States should not harbor him or any authoritarian who has inspired such violence against democratic institutions,» insist those who sign the letter.

In this sense, they have also asked the White House to analyze Bolsonaro’s legal situation in the United States, since, as he is no longer president of Brazil, nor holds any official position, there may be no legal basis for maintaining his presence in the United States.

On the eve of the inauguration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Bolsonaro left for the United States where, in principle, he intended to stay until the end of January. During his stay, he has had to be admitted to a hospital for recurrent abdominal pains resulting from a stabbing he suffered in 2018 when he was a candidate and which could accelerate his return to Brazil.
