Brazil’s Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes, at the request of the Attorney General’s Office, has opened an investigation against the dismissed governor of Brasilia, Ibaneis Rocha, for «negligence» during the assault on state institutions by a mob of fans of former president Jair Bolsonaro.

In addition to Rocha, who was removed from office for 90 days by De Moraes himself after the violent acts of January 8, also included in the investigation is the former Minister of Justice under Bolsonaro, Anderson Torres, who was responsible for security in the capital, and for whom an arrest warrant has been issued.

Fernando de Sousa Oliveira, former interim secretary of Public Security of Brasilia and Fábio Augusto Vieira, former commander of the Brasilia Military Police, will also be investigated for «negligence» during the management of the attacks and «collusion» with those responsible.

In the case of Rocha, De Moraes claims that he not only defended a fake political protest in Brasília — «knowing that the institutions would be attacked» — but also «ignored» all calls from the other authorities to put a security plan in place.

«At such a sensitive moment for Brazilian democracy, when anti-democratic acts occur daily, with the occupation of the vicinity of military spaces throughout the country and in Brasilia, one cannot plead ignorance or incompetence for willful and criminal omission,» De Moraes points out.

In the same ruling, the Supreme Court judge also authorized other demands of the Attorney General’s Office, such as that the Ministry of Justice investigate possible crimes committed against President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, or that the new Comptroller of Brasília, Ricardo Cappelli, be able to hold those in charge of security accountable.

For his part, Rocha is voluntarily testifying before the Federal Police after submitting a request to the Supreme Court, in order to «clarify all the circumstances» of the actions of the Government of Brasília during the events of Sunday, January 8.
