The governor of Brasilia, Ibaneis Rocha, suspended from office after the assault on the headquarters of the three branches of government last Sunday by Bolsonaro supporters, has assured in his statement that it was the Army that prevented the Police from evicting the encampment of supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro who later stormed the headquarters of Congress, the Federal Supreme Court and the presidential palace.
The camp was in an area «subject to the administration of the Army command» so it had agreed with the military the date of December 29, 2022 for the beginning of the eviction of the protesters, but the eviction was «paralyzed by order of the Army command», said Rocha, according to the newspaper ‘O Dia’.
According to Rocha, the federal government «was aware of the Army’s opposition to the removal of the camps,» he explained during his statement on Friday.
Ibaneis – a political ally of former president Bolsonaro – has been suspended from the post of governor of the Federal District of Brasília for a period of 90 days by decision of the Federal Supreme Court as a result of the invasion of the three powers last Sunday.
The federal government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva decreed the intervention of the Federal District government and the demonstrators were evicted within hours. The Bolsonaristas were demanding a coup d’état and the annulment of the October 2022 elections that gave Lula the victory over Bolsonaro.
