King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia landed this Sunday afternoon in Athens to attend the funeral on Monday for the former king of Greece for nine years, who died last Tuesday at the age of 82 after being admitted in serious condition in a private hospital in the Greek capital due to health problems.
According to the Royal Household, the King and Queen have already arrived in the Greek capital and will attend the funeral of the monarch’s uncle and brother of Queen Sofia, who is already in Athens with his family.
The King Emeritus also plans to attend the funeral and will travel from Abu Dhabi to the Greek capital, which will lead to a new public meeting between Juan Carlos I and his son, as already happened at the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in London last September.
The former Hellenic king’s state of health had been very unstable for several years. In early 2022 he was hospitalized after being infected with COVID-19 and in December 2021 he suffered an ischemic attack while staying with his wife at the palace of Porto Heli.
The monarch’s last public appearance was last October 23, when he attended in a wheelchair the wedding of his youngest son, Prince Philippos of Greece to Nina Flohr.
