The NGO Amnesty International has called for an investigation by the authorities of Equatorial Guinea to clarify the death of the Equatoguinean opposition leader Julio Obama Mefuman, who has Spanish citizenship, in the prison of Oveng Azem, in Mongomo.
«Amnesty International calls on President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo to carry out an urgent and independent investigation. The rights of detainees must be guaranteed in Equatorial Guinea’s prisons,» it said Monday on its official Twitter profile.
He also insisted that Equatorial Guinea must ensure that all prisoners are treated «with dignity» and «have access to legal assistance» as well as that they are «free from torture and other ill-treatment».
Obama’s party, the Equatorial Guinea Liberation Movement, stressed the day before that he had died due to the torture he had been subjected to and urged the Spanish government to break off relations with the Equatoguinean government.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation has summoned this Monday the head of the delegation of Equatorial Guinea in Madrid to ask him to clarify the circumstances in which the death of the opponent took place, diplomatic sources have informed Europa Press.
The Equatoguinean diplomat has been received at the Ministry by the ‘number two’ of Foreign Affairs, Angeles Moreno, to ask for explanations for the death of Mefuman, who was in the prison of Oveng Azem (Mongomo) held together with the also Spanish Feliciano Efa Mangue.
His death occurred less than two weeks after it became known that the Audiencia Nacional is investigating three high-ranking officials of Teodoro Obiang Nguema’s regime, one of them his son, in connection with the alleged kidnapping and subsequent torture of these two Spaniards.
