At least 70 people have died in the past week in Afghanistan due to the country’s cold snap, which has also wrecked crops and livestock, the head of the Disaster Management Ministry’s emergency operations center, Maulvi Abdullah Mohamadi, has said.
According to preliminary figures, the deaths have been recorded in different cities, such as Herat, Kandahar and Nimroz, among others. The storm has also left 70,000 head of cattle dead, as reported by the news portal Tolo News.
The Ministry of Disaster Management has reported that food aid has been distributed to at least 5,000 families affected by the sudden drop in temperatures, which has caused heavy snowfall and blocked roads in several states in central and northern Afghanistan.
In fact, in recent days, the Afghan capital, Kabul, has recorded disruptions in the water and electricity supply system. The Afghan Chamber of Industries and Mines has warned that services for customers are not active even for an hour.
The new cold snap has blocked access points to the most remote areas of Afghanistan, where medicines and food are already in short supply. Winter crops have been severely damaged, especially vegetables, further aggravating the food crisis.
