Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro plans to extend his stay in the United States while investigations against those involved in the attacks on the headquarters of the three branches of government on January 8 continue, amid calls for his extradition to answer to the authorities for his role in what happened.
A group of businessmen from Sao Paulo who sympathize with the ex-president have met in the last few days to pay for his stay in the United States, where he traveled on December 30, thus avoiding being in Brazil during the inauguration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
The central issue is financial, according to Bolsonaro’s allies consulted by ‘Folha de Sao Paulo’, for which reason he is considering the possibility of organizing a series of conferences – at 10,000 dollars each – with American businessmen, one of which the former president has promised to give.
There is a strong opacity about how the stay in the United States of Bolsonaro, who is staying at the house that the mixed martial arts fighter José Aldo has in Orlando, in the state of Florida, is being paid.
His close circle has recommended him to open an account in the Orlando branch of Banco do Brasil in order to access the funds he has in his country. Bolsonaro now has a monthly salary of about 8,100 euros for having been a deputy and retired military, although the Liberal Party (PL) has promised him another salary, which could reach up to 7,400 euros, but on the condition that he returns.
Bolsonaro’s presence has not been without setbacks–as when he had to be admitted for recurring abdominal pains as a result of a stabbing when he was a candidate in 2018–and controversy, after several Democratic congressmen asked President Joe Biden for his departure.
The legal question of his stay is also in question, since his status as head of state ended two days after arriving in the United States. If he intends to stay longer, he should apply for a temporary business or work visa, or a tourist visa, which would give him another 90-day extension.
